The Book

In 2009 Cambridge University Press launched Cambridge Footsteps: a passage through time. This hardback edition is a collection of many of Ian’s favourite paintings from 1997 to 2008. The book was printed to help celebrate the 800th anniversary of the university, as well as the 425th anniversary of the Press.

With 72 pages, this is a visual arts feast, with both grand and intimate portrayals of all the colleges, as well as many of the significant university buildings. Former Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, and former Master of Magdalene College Duncan Robinson generously provided the Foreword – Ian is himself an alumnus of Magdalene. The book also includes Notes from the Artist. The city and its colleges are beautifully illustrated and the paintings collected together into two walking routes, so a visitor could explore the city and Ian’s inspirations on foot.

The book was available at the University Bookstore in Cambridge as well as online with Cambridge University Press. It made an ideal gift and memory of the city for students and academics, as well as the tourists passing through. In 2016 Cambridge University Press announced that the first edition had sold out. Regrettably they also announced that they would not be reprinting the book. Sheldon may end up exploring other printing avenues to ensure that all the work continues to be made available to the public. In the meantime, the limited edition prints on this website are here to serve as a memory to the book and the beautiful work incorporated in it.
